How to throw the best photo themed 60th birthday party ever

Birthday parties are a lot of fun and a lot of work. I have known for a long time that I wanted a big birthday party to celebrate my 60th year, and it turned out to be more than I could have hoped for.

Everyone pitched in to create exactly what I dreamed of, and friends and family who couldn’t attend made sure I felt loved and honored as well.

My son, Adam created the invitation for me.

The invitation!

The semi-superhero

I don’t recall why we made the decision for John to come stay with me after being released from the hospital. But there he was, stitched up swollen lips and broken teeth sitting on my deck drinking coffee from a straw.

He had doctor’s orders not to drive because they were still trying to figure out the extent of his brain injury. So there I was waiting on him and nursing him back to health.

The guy who forgot he’d said, “I love you Loretta” to me the night before the accident.

The one who was facing a felony charge for running from the cops, and the man who now looked more like Sloth from Goonies than Michael Fassbender’s Magneto.

What the hell was I thinking?

Birthday Bash

Birthdays are a big deal to me, but you probably already know that. And without trying to state the obvious, this next one is perhaps the biggest in the deal department yet.

I can only remember one birthday party as a kid. Just one. I may have singled this one party out, but I doubt it. The reason it may stand out the most is that was also the occasion that my younger brother, Brian, decided to stand on the fence and pee in front of my friends.

I was nine and mortified.

A Birthday to Celebrate

Thirty-five years ago today, I woke up at 6am and it started.

Just like the book said, the very first sign of ‘delivery day’ came, and I knew I would be meeting my first child that day.

Everything went like clockwork and by 2pm his father and I headed to the hospital. And at just before 5pm we met our son for the very first time.

Adam was born on Dec. 30th and I took him home on Dec. 31st…New Year’s Eve. Only he wasn’t Adam then. We had named him Christopher Adam, but when I got home and looked down at his little face, I started crying and said, “His name isn’t Christopher!”

Have you ever toured the Florida Keys via motorcycle?

A couple of people asked about our motorcycle trip in Florida, so I thought I’d share it with you.

It was spring of 2016 and we decided to tour the Keys via motorcycle. Only we didn’t want to drive a motorcycle all the way from California to Florida, so we looked into renting a bike there.

I didn’t even know that was an option until then.

We found Rent My Motorcycle in West Palm Beach, and John was thrilled to see they had a BMW R1200RT bike in the fleet. The owner, JR is a great guy and has a very interesting story behind how he got into his business. Continue reading

My John

The first time I went to Ireland and met John’s family I was a bit overwhelmed with their accents, especially those in the North. And it’s not just the way they pronounce words; it’s their colloquialisms.

For instance, when they introduced Sharon to me, she was called “Our Sharon”. And believe me it didn’t sound like our Sharon. It was more like “R Shrn”. So to me, she is still R Shrn.

After that I started calling John, My John.

Weekend – Celebration!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you lovely moms out there! I hope you all enjoy a day (or two) of celebration.

This weekend was my birthday party and Mother’s Day celebration, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. My son, daughter-in-law and granddaughters arrived Friday night and by early Saturday morning, the festivities began with a wonderful home cooked breakfast.

Truly one of the best things about getting older is having my adult kids as friends. We have the best laughs and enjoy sitting at the table together, talking and joking around, long after the food is gone.

59 years BOLD

Several friends asked about my 59 years Bold t-shirt I was wearing yesterday on my birthday. Chico’s started a How Bold Are You challenge and the Forever Fierce community teamed up with them to create these very cool t-shirts.

I ordered mine here, and love it.

They say it’s your birthday

My birthday is a big deal to me.

I know birthdays are not a big deal for everyone, but for me, they’re important. Maybe it’s because I was born on Mother’s Day 1959 and I’ve shared my birthday with that holiday many times since.

Or maybe it’s because I only remember having ONE birthday party when I was a kid. And I’m pretty sure that was the time my brother stood on the fence and pee’d in front of everyone, effectively ruining my birthday.

He thought it was funny.

Happy Birthday to youth

Yesterday I posted my Wednesday “Let’s do this together” video. Each week I like to share some little tidbit about exercise or diet that I have gleaned from my week. And yesterday’s post was about trying to get enough exercise while on the road.

Have you ever toured or stayed on the Queen Mary, in Long Beach, CA? Continue reading

Weekend – San Francisco

John and I headed up to San Francisco yesterday to celebrate his Mother’s birthday today. San Francisco is my favorite city, and I always enjoy coming here.

As a matter of fact, John and I got married at City Hall, and it always brings back wonderful memories of that time. Every time we visit, I get a sense of awe.

This morning we took a brisk walk to City Hall:

Always fun to visit this iconic building

I hope your weekend is filled with wonder and awe.

Weekend – Getaway!

What a busy time of year!

This month started out with a fire that would ultimately turn into the largest fire in California history. We were busy traveling to the East Coast to help my youngest son and his family pack up, graduate from Test Pilot School, and move across the country.

Throw in Christmas and escaping from The Thomas Fire, and you can see how things may have gotten a bit crazy for a while.

But the fun is not over.

Willow

There are some years in my life that don’t really stand out much. Just another year that went by with no life changing event or trauma. After everything I’ve been through, I kind of cherish those years. But 1992 was a year I remember fondly.

Buying a small farm and fixing it up was challenging, but so very rewarding. The day we moved into our little farm was my 32nd birthday, and Mother’s Day. I was born on Mother’s Day, so every few years or so, my birthday falls on that Sunday. When that happens most of my friends are busy celebrating Mother’s Day, and so I usually don’t count on a big to do.

That day was different.

Life Changes – Part one

I didn’t intend to be in another relationship at 20, but there I was living with a man in a tiny home in Bend Oregon. I met Joseph in July of 1979 and by the fall of that year we were living together.

It only seemed natural to move my belongings and my cat in with his belongings and his cat. I had a kitten named Joe when we met and it didn’t take long before my boyfriend’s name became Joseph instead of Joe.
