Aging on my terms - Daily musings in 500 words or so

How to write a book

I promised myself I’d spend January researching how to write a book; so I sat down with Stephen King and gleaned some valuable information, “On Writing.”

I learned a few rules from JK Rowling too including, “Be ruthless about protecting writing days…” And this rule that actually made me feel better about going for it, “Failure is inevitable – make it a strength…”

Somewhere I read the best thing to do is to write how you talk, which is easy for me since that’s exactly how I write. I love Seth Godin’s quote, “No one ever gets talker’s block.”

It’s been fun digging around and deciding what I want my first book to be.

I spent some time hiking and thinking about what it will look like. I sat at the beach listening to the waves crashing while ideas and directions came to me. Using my phone, I created voice memos; and while pedaling my bike up a hill, I found my first line.

My place to sit and think

Next I promised myself that beginning February 1st I’d have my outline done and start Chapter 1; so far, I’m right on schedule.

And speaking of schedule, I’m going to implement a new blog agenda, too. I have to. It’s too hard for me to stay focused on my book and come up with new blog posts each day.

Don’t worry. I’m not going to leave you hanging here, but I will be cutting back to two (maybe three) posts per week. I know you will be rooting me on, and I’ll be sure to share updates along the way.

Thanks for sticking with me and helping me through this first book process, and watch for more of the story tomorrow.

    Yay for the book.

I write like I talk. I remember my ex saying that my writing was lousy, because I wrote like I talked.

    Screw him.

Can’t wait to read the book my friend!

  5. I’m so excited for you, and us, your readers! It’s almost a month of your decision to keep a dedicated writing time now. I hope it has become a habit and easier everyday. I’m cheering for you!
