Have you ever toured the Florida Keys via motorcycle?

A couple of people asked about our motorcycle trip in Florida, so I thought I’d share it with you.

It was spring of 2016 and we decided to tour the Keys via motorcycle. Only we didn’t want to drive a motorcycle all the way from California to Florida, so we looked into renting a bike there.

I didn’t even know that was an option until then.

We found Rent My Motorcycle in West Palm Beach, and John was thrilled to see they had a BMW R1200RT bike in the fleet. The owner, JR is a great guy and has a very interesting story behind how he got into his business.

Now that we had a motorcycle secured, it was time to find a flight.

Flights into Fort Lauderdale are really pretty inexpensive, especially if you take the red-eye. We found a non-stop flight for just $250 per person and booked them for the week just before my birthday.

Since we were landing at 5 am, we decided to rent a hotel for the night before and prepay it. That way we could go straight to the hotel for a few hours of sleep before taking the train at noon down to West Palm Beach.

JR graciously offered to pick us up at the train station and give us a ride to his shop. The bike we rented was fully equipped with hard bags for our belongings, so we transferred our things from our suitcases, and left them with JR and headed out.

We arrived in Key Largo just in time for the sunset at Gilbert’s Resort on our first night. It was such a fun place with little beaches and a Tiki bar to grab a drink and sit and watch the dolphins.

The next morning, after breakfast at Key Largo Conch House, we headed south. To get an idea of how small the Key’s are, it’s just a two-hour drive from Key Largo to Key West.

On our way, we stopped to feed the Tarpons at Robbie’s of Islamorada, which was great fun.

We arrived in Key West in time to lounge by the pool at The Gates Hotel. But we both had a need to stick our feet in the ocean, so we walked across the street to enjoy a small beach to ourselves.

I’m pretty sure after this shot, he said his feet were a bit bloody from the coral

There is so much to do and see in Key West, and we knew we wanted to stay a few days. I asked friends where to have dinner our first night, and Waterfront Brewery was highly recommended.

Every night at sunset in Mallory Square there is a celebration.

It’s the one place on the East Coast that the sun sets over water and everyone comes out to watch. It was so fun to be a part of the festivities.

Our second night in Key West, we planned on seeing a drag show at Aqua, and it was the highlight of our trip. The performers are amazing and fun and they had the entire lounge captivated.

When they asked if there were any birthdays in the house, John raised my hand and said, “It’s her birthday!” I was ushered onstage to join in the fun and sing Happy Birthday to us all.

I highly recommend a trip to Key West at least once in your lifetime.

The following day we headed back north to get a taste of Miami. We stayed at the Avalon Hotel in the heart of South Beach.

We found amazing Cuban food at Havana 1957, visited some of the Art Deco hotels and shops and stayed out dancing until 2am. After seeing the sunset in Key West, I wanted to see the sunrise in Miami.

So after just a few hours rest, we got up early and made our way to the beach the very next morning. I didn’t want to wear my motorcycle jacket and the air was a little chilly so I grabbed the robe from the room.

After a night of dancing, we were still determined to catch the sunrise in South Beach

I loved our morning in South Beach.

Was such a fun night and morning

We spent our last night in Florida in West Palm Beach and celebrated my 57th birthday at the beach.

I will never forget that trip and it is still one of our all time favorite vacations. And it also was the reason we ended up purchasing our own BMW R1200RT this last Christmas.

Now we need to plan a vacation on our bike.

I love the keys and they would be fabulous to tour on a motorcycle! We have actually toured a lot of the country on motorcycle – our most recent trip was Chicago to Colorado to Wyoming to Chicago, which was a great trip. I’ll have to add this one to the bucket list!!
